Fire Safes: What do you need to protect your Valuables?
No one wants to think that a fire will happen in their own home, but it does happen and more often than one would think. Most often it is accidental. I remember as a child a fire in my own home. My Dad had a deep fat fryer plugged in getting hot (my Mom is English, so had fish and chips for dinner every Saturday night). He was getting ready to go pick up my Mom from work, was distracted by a phone call and forgot to unplug the fryer before leaving. There were four of us kids at home when the kitchen caught fire. We were fine, there was a quick response from the fire department and damage was contained. We got to live at a hotel for six weeks, they had a swimming pool so it was cool for a 10 year old. But we were lucky. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the US and the leading cause of home fire
injuries. - read entire article -

Buying Gun Safes at a Discount and a Historical Marketing Tragedy
In today's world, sometimes marketing seems to get vicious as companies try to out do their competitors, or stores as they try to outsell other retailers. But a lot of marketing strategies have changed with the internet. Not only do stores have to compete locally, but also nationally and often globally. They compete against large internet companies, and companies that can appear large online, but may be home run businesses. It is a new competitiveness in today’s market that has drastically changed the way the public shops. This is obvious with many items today, especially smaller ones, but what about large, heavy items, such as gun safes? Yes, even these are available online, gun safes discount prices, and sometimes with free shipping. After all, isn’t that one of the main concerns about ordering a heavy items online - the shipping charge? Now, regardless of apparently devious marketing practices of today, they do not compare with many underhanded tactics used 150 years ago. - read entire article -

Understanding Ratings of a Sentry Fire Gun Safe
How much fire protection do you need for your Sentry fire gun safe? And what do all those ratings mean anyhow? All Sentry safes undergo UL fire testing. This means that safes are tested by the independent Underwriters Laboratory. One very important thing to realize is that you want a safe that is “UL Listed”. This means that the product has actually passed a UL test. If a product is labeled “Tested to UL Standards” that means that the product has been submitted for testing, but does not mean that it passed the test. All Sentry Fire Safes are subjected to fire by UL for either 1/2, 1 or 2 hours. In order for a safe to earn a UL classification, documents stored inside must remain completely undamaged. Here are some of the different tests that a Sentry Fire Gun Safe may endure. - read entire article -

Safes: To Crack or not to Crack, that is the Question!
Though we don't really have a lot of safes lying around the house, we did once receive a safe from an estate sale. We promptly locked the combination inside (dumb, yes, but lets assume the fault lies with one of our children!). Two possible scenarios came to mind to access the contents of the safe: one was the scene from the The Apple Dumpling Gang (a movie we recently felt compelled to expose our kids to from our own childhood). I don't remember the details of the scene, but it ended with a large explosion, money flying everywhere, and no one injured - only a bit of soot on everyone's face. Though there was no disclaimer, the scene screamed at me “DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!” My next thought was of The Italian Job and Charlize Theron. She had quite a touch in opening the most difficult safe under stressful situations successfully and without causing any damage to the safe. Hmmm? Not knowing Charlize personally, I decided to call my local locksmith to get his take on the situation. It turned out that he had seen this problem before and had quite a “sensitive” ear for this type of thing. - read entire article -

Sentry Safes - An American Company
According to Merriam Webster, a sentry is a Guard or Watch; especially a soldier standing guard at a point of passage (as a gate). Other synonyms for sentry include sentinel, watchtower, lookout and patrol. The entymology of the word dates back to the 1500’s, coming from the Latin sentina (vigilance) and sentire (to perceive). Considering the meaning of sentry, it is understandable the naming of Sentry Safes. - read entire article -

What Type of Safes are Available without Getting a Really Big One?
Often when I think of a safe, I think of a large, rectangular, reinforced metal “box” for placing valuable or firearms. Though these large types of safes are available, and there is a very good reason to have one, they are not the only options out there for protecting your valuables. We do not have any firearms in our house, so we do not need large. But we do have some valuables and important documents that we would like to keep safe, especially in case of a fire. After doing a bit of research, I decided that I really like Sentry safes, so I took a look to see what they offered, and was impressed with the large range of different types of Sentry safes. - read entire article -

Which Sentry Safe is Best for Me?
I know that I want a Sentry Safe, but there are so many different types available that I wonder how I will know what is the best safe for me to purchase? With a little research I discovered that there are two main questions to ask.
1. What type of items do I want to protect?
2. What type of protection am I interested in receiving? - read entire article -

What to put in your Cannon Safe
I was just talking to a friend who just got a great deal on a Cannon Safe. The store was going out of business and she couldn’t pass it up. She knew she needed a safe to protect her valuables and important documents, but had been putting it off until she had more time (like that will happen!). So she called and asked me what she should put in her safe. Normally, I would say that is one of many questions that should be asked BEFORE buying a safe. But ... lets just take a general look at possible things that she could store in her new Cannon safe. - read entire article -

Fingerprint Recognition Technology on Home Safes?
Normally when I think of home safes, I think of small, square and very heavy metal safes for securing away your valuables with a combination lock. But today, in such a fast paced and evolving world, we are not limited by such narrow guidelines. Home safes today come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, different types of locking mechanisms and are designed to hold different types of items. - read entire article -

Discount Gun Safes
Shopping for discount gun safes are like shopping for almost anything else, with the big difference that a gun safe can be pretty expensive compared to many regular consumer goods. As a consumer, you gather information, specifications, features, warranties, and prices. It's not hard to do. Think about the last time you went to a large discount store to buy, say, dog food. You look at the weight and the price of the various bags. Then, if you are at all concerned about your dog's nutrition, you look at the nutrition information printed on each of the bags. If you are like me, you are not a dog food nutrition expert so you sort of just take your best guess based on what you read. Ultimately, you decide and make your purchase. - read entire article -

Home Safes Insurance Rating Systems
There are many home safes on the market today, and like many industries, it has its own vocabulary. But everyday people own home safes, and most do not want to learn the industry lingo in order to purchase the one that is best for them. Most safes are security and fire tested by the independent Universal Laboratories, and have a UL rating based upon the security and fire testing that they have passed. - read entire article -

The Question Now is: Can you Keep Your Rifle or Pistol Safe?
Keeping a rifle or pistol safe is perhaps an obvious commonsense obligation of anyone who chooses to own a gun. And while the Second Amendment of the US Constitution provides a statutory basis for gun ownership in America, it does not outline how those guns are to be kept. The right to keep and bear arms is a controversial topic that sparks lively debates in homes and public forums around the country. Is the meaning of the Second Amendment properly interpreted to be that individuals are guaranteed the right to possess and carry a wide variety of firearms? Or, was the Amendment meant only to guarantee States the right to operate militias? - read entire article -

Sometimes Safes are not so Safe
Safes hold secrets, and people are curious. People with enough curiosity will do almost anything to get inside them; and they have. And I'm not talking only about bandana wearing robbers back in the wild wild west. Those six-gun totin' bad guys may have laid a proud history and foundation of thievery, but they weren't much compared to the modern day bad guy. Oh no, nowadays you don't just walk into any ol' bank, set some explosives off and ride off to infamy. Modern technology makes safes more secure than ever, but the potential haul is apparently pretty motivating for some. Let's take a look at a couple of bank notorious that have occurred in recent history. - read entire article -

Important Information when Purchasing a Fire Safe
There are two basic types of safes, fire and burglary. Obviously, a fire safe is to protect against fire and the other against theft. Today, all safes will protects to some degree against both, but few offer strong fire and theft protection. This is because of the type of construction used in a fire or burglary safe is different, and what makes a safe protect against fire can make it vulnerable to theft. A fire safe typically has thin metal walls with insulating material (often called fire board) sandwiched between them. This makes the safe vulnerable to a forcible attack. But a safe built to safeguard against burglary needs to have thick steel walls, and this can cause the safe's interior to heat up too quickly during a fire to offer the type of protection needed to survive a hot blaze. - read entire article -

Exercise Your 2nd Amendment Right to Bear Arms, but Keep Your Handgun Safe!
One of the founding principles of the United States of America, as found in the Second Amendment of the Constitution is that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Though the world has changed a lot since 1787, does that mean that our rights have changed? The nature of man has not changed, there have always been good and bad people, those who wish us the best and others who wish us the worst. There are a lot of questions about how the 2nd Amendment is interpreted regarding many things like automatic weapons, but today I just want to take a look at handguns, and how to keep your handgun safe if you own one. - read entire article -

Why I Love my Liberty Safe
I love my Liberty safe! I honestly believe that they make the best safes on the market. I wouldn't own anything else for securing my firearms. In fact, I found it interesting when I learned that over 4 million households are burglarized in the United States every year. Also, statistics show that violent gun crimes in America are most often committed by youths who get the guns from their own homes. Plus, millions of guns are stolen each year. In fact, the National Crime Information Center reports that they have more than 2 million stolen guns on file. I'd say that the risk of danger from unsecured or stolen firearms is pretty high. - read entire article -

A Safe History of Locks
Though the actual history of safes may not be very long, the main component and perhaps one of the most important parts of a safe has been, and that is the lock. It is hard to say when locks were first invented because there is not always a written history, and because of the materials used when locks were made, there are not very many still around today. However, there is evidence that many different civilizations developed locks independently of each other, among them being the Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese and Romans... - read entire article -

Everybody Loves the Mystique of a Wall Safe
Who doesn't like the idea of a wall safe? They are cool and fun. As a kid I used to dream about how to make special hiding places for things, both inside and out. It wasn't very sophisticated. Usually a little box or hollowed out tube of some sort would keep me happy. Of course, hide-and-go-seek was always my favorite game. As an adult, I still have a fascination with all things clandestine and sneaky. Secret codes, hidden compartments, bugs, top secret information, listening devices, that sort of thing. I guess the appeal of a wall safe comes from the excitement of knowing something that someone else doesn't. - read entire article -

Is there Really such a thing as a Fireproof Safe?
You may be somewhat shocked to learn that there are actually no industry standards for testing and rating a fireproof safe. In fact, there may not even really be such a thing as a fully fireproof safe. Eventually, a hot enough fire, for a long enough period of time wins every time. Certainly, some safes are able to resist fire more than others, but each manufacturer has different processes and standards... - read entire article -

Floor Safes are Inherently More Secure
I have to admit that I have never been a burglar so I am just guessing here, but I would say that most burglars just aren't really that motivated to spend a whole lot of time in someone's house or place of business while ripping them off. They don't really want to spend a lot of time looking around for things like floor safes or other hidden safes. Nope, they prefer quick in and quick out. I'm sure most crooks don't mind a quick check behind the paintings, or in bookshelves, or behind cabinet doors. But beyond that, being in someone's house uninvited, with nefarious intention, just isn't a leisurely la-dee-da experience. So, using a floor safe increases the likelihood that a thief will not be successful just by the nature of the safe itself. - read entire article -

The Fatboy Liberty Safe

A little more looking around revealed a British DJ with the stage name of Fatboy Slim. And of course, a British movie that I enjoyed, "Run Fat Boy Run". Keeping People and Things Safe at Home
Everybody has an intrinsic understanding of the value of being safe. Nobody wants harm or danger to come to their family, health or valuables. We hope for it, we work for it, we even pray for it. As a praying family, it is a common supplication at our house to ask that "no harm or danger" would befall us. Yep, safety is a big deal. Sometimes the things that happen to threaten us, or our things, occur through no fault of our own. Other times, there are things we could have done that would have kept us safe if only we had been just a bit more diligent. I thought a closer look at this would be worthwhile as a reminder, if nothing else. - read entire article -

Safes: 3 Major Historical Developments
If you have ever seen a Robin Hood movie (animated or not), you may have noticed that when Robin robbed from the Sheriff of Nottingham, the gold was often kept in a wood box that was bound with iron straps. These were called strong boxes, and are the precursor to modern day safes. It seems rather obvious that a wood box has limited security potential, and offers almost no protection against fire, but it wasn't until the late 1700's that we started seeing serious efforts in what would become modern day safes. Let's take a look at three of the these developments. - read entire article -

This may be the case, but I am not so sure that, what motivates people to buy, is always the best reason, especially when that reason comes from a place of fear or illusion. - read entire article -

Not all Fireproof Gun Safes are Created Equal
Fireproof gun safes are something many people with guns are very interested in, and with good reason. Guns are expensive, potentially dangerous, and certainly deserving of being stored in a safe and appropriate location, like a fireproof safe. Before I get too far along here let me just make a comment about the idea that gun safes are fireproof. This term, "fireproof", is just a little misleading. Nothing is absolutely immune from the ravages of heat and fire if subjected to it intensely enough and for a long enough period of time... - read entire article -

A Sentry Fire Safe to Help you Avoid Total Destruction in a Fire
The weather turned cold the other week, so it was time to load up the wood burning stove to get some heat in the house. We have had a wood burning stove in the past, but not for about 12 years, so we have to get accustomed to maintaining a fire again. But, I love wood heat, so it is worth the effort. However, the wood stove also got me to thinking about safety issues as well. I know two people who had their home burn to the ground last year (neither due to a wood stove), and realize that fire is a danger to anyone... - read entire article -

Does my Fire Safe Offer Enough Protection?
We do not have a big, fancy, heavy duty fire safe to protect our valuables if something goes wrong and our house goes up in flames. All we have is a small security chest that can be easily grabbed in case of an emergency. Though small, it holds many of our important items. Things such as our social security cards, birth certificates, vehicle titles, our will and trust, our back up FireLite hard drive (which holds thousands of family photos), and a few personal items. - read entire article -

Fire Safes Protect from Fire and From Theft
Fire safes protect from fire. That's just what they do. At least that's what they are supposed to do. And most of them do a pretty decent job. They don't protect from fire for an endless length of time, however. They are designed to protect from heat for a reasonable amount of time. Studies have shown that the average house fire lasts around a half hour. That's about how long it takes for firemen to extinguish the fire, or for it to burn out. This is the length of time you can expect good fire safes to protect what is inside them. - read entire article -

Fire Proof Gun Safes can Bring you Peace of Mind
The main thing to know about fire proof gun safes is that they are only fire proof for a limited amount of time. They are not immune from the ravages of high heat for endless lengths of time. This may be just a technical distinction, but a useful one for consumers nonetheless. If you put enough heat in direct contact with a metal safe there will be a point beyond which the contents inside will not be protected. But that's okay. If a safe can protect your guns and other valuables until fire fighters can extinguish the fire, then you can consider your things protected. In that case, your safe did its job. - read entire article -

When I was first married over twenty years ago I didn't think about things like home safes, securing important papers and valuables, or anything else even closely related. I just concerned myself with life's more basic distractions, like working, eating, sleeping, and maybe catching a movie every once in a while. As I got older things started to change. Before I knew it I got to the point where I felt the need to secure a few things. - read entire article -
